Sugar Rush: Stollen at Hot Bread Kitchen
Stollen often has a reputation of being that holiday fruit bread that no one wants to touch. But luckily, we have a few versions to prove otherwise in NYC. Remember the whiskey-kissed version from Momofuku Milk Bar? It's back again this year at the Union Square Holiday Market, put it on your shopping list.
And perhaps even more importantly, Hot Bread Kitchen just introduced Stollen ($11.99) for the first time. You can find it at their Greenmarket locations and all Whole Foods in the city. It's a generous, hearty loaf, though I somehow devoured the entire thing over the course of a day. Whole almonds and nuggets of almond paste are prominently featured alongside dried cherries, raisins, candied orange and lemon. Toast a slice and you'll get whiffs of warming cloves, cardamom, and ginger. There's also a solid dose of rum and brandy in there, all finished with that requisite sugar glaze.
