Simple should never be underestimated. At Bottega Falai, squares of puff pastry tarts ($5) are given the classic pairing of frangipane and fruits. You'll find the tarts complete with apples and pears (pictured), sliced and baked tender. Ask for the corner piece when possible; those few bites of well-browned, almost burnt puff pastry are irresistible, especially with a dusting of powdered sugar. The pastry itself aims for light and flaky, just sturdy enough to uphold that buttery almond joy. Take it to go, or better yet, couple it with an espresso and grab a seat for people watching on Lafayette.
