Good gelato in the city is concentrated in the West Village: L'arte del Gelato, Amorino, and Otto to name a few. So we'll take what we can get in the East Village, and the recently opened Fresco on 2nd Avenue gets the job done. While you shouldn't expect the best gelato in town, Fresco turns out a respectable and reliable array of flavors at prices starting at $3.50 for a small. Texture-wise, the gelato runs fluffy, significantly more airy than classic gelato. The flavors are also on the lighter side. Stick to the easy pleasing choice like Nutella (pictured), the Bacio, and Salted Caramel, at which they excel. Fresco does branch out to more unconventional flavors like rosewater and goat cheese, but those are a hit or miss.
