A Sandwich a Day: Shrimp Souvlaki at Snack Taverna

"Souvlaki" is a term usually reserved for skewered grilled meat, sometimes fish, but at Snack Taverna in the West Village, you can get a Shrimp Souvlaki ($12) instead. It's a pita wrap sandwich dressed with not-too-briny taramasalata, crunchy romaine, red onion, and large hunks of warm, slightly grilled tomato.

The shrimp themselves are large, plentiful, and quite well cooked—tender and crisp with a bit of smokiness from the grill. They pick up some tomato juices on the way, which reduce to a proto-glaze for added flavor. It's messy eating for a sandwich, particularly if you take it to go, but the toasty pita still holds up to all the fillings.
