A Sandwich a Day: Pork Souvlaki at Mama Gyro

Mama Gyro has formed a following on the Upper East Side, and we want to be part of it. (And now that it's opening a new location in Union Square, that should be easier than ever.) At lunchtime, the small storefront is packed with construction workers and nearby Lenox Hill staff and patients in search of a quick Greek fix.
The Souvlaki Pita ($4) comes stuffed with marinated pork, French fries, onions, tomatoes, and a choice of sauce. We got the tzatziki, a tangy, refreshing yogurt sauce that enhances the sliced pork, which has crisp caramelized edges, if a little on the dry side. Perhaps not a destination gyro, but next time I'm in the area and need to refuel, I will gladly shell out $4 for a tasty pita wrap.
