A Sandwich A Day: Josephine Special Hero at Paulie's Place

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

I didn't realize until I bit into the Josephine Hero ($5) at Paulie's Place that honey mustard must have gone out of style quite some time ago: one taste of this sandwich and I was hit with a flavor I'm sure I haven't experienced since the early aughts. I missed it! It was my training mustard back in the day, and to it I owe my dedication to Dijon. I may have never gotten here without it.

In addition to honey mustard, the not-that-interesting hero bread was layered with grilled chicken, ham, and sorta but not really melted swiss. I liked the sweet and savory balance of the double-meat with the bygone condiment. Sure, the chicken was dry, but the sandwich is quite large and only sets you back about $5. Seriously.

So, like the grilled cheese before it, this sandwich is in no way a perfect specimen, but it sure packs a lot of bang for your buck, and if you're in the area a lot, it's a notable non-dumpling cheap eat option.
