At Empire Cake, Fresh Key Lime Squares ($3) are not to be missed. They have just the right proportion of buttery, shortbread base to tart, clean key lime curd filling. They're topped with tiny dollops of whipped cream and go down in six perfect bites.
Empire Cake also does a lemon version, though I find lime to be superior. The bakery's take on Ding Dongs and Twinkies get a lot of attention, but do not miss the Homemade "Twix." It's a newer addition to the menu, coupling shortbread cookies with creamy, thick caramel, all covered in a dark chocolate shell. And those kooky looking creatures sitting next to the muffins and cookies? Marzipan molded into the shape of Angry Birds (the entire crew)! You'll never go back to the boring old fruit-shaped ones again.
