A Sandwich a Day: All American at Murray's Cheese Shop
In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Murray's Cheese Shop is a place so great that they could easily just melt some cheese on bread and call it a day, but they go the extra mile with their sandwiches, taking the time to make ingredients in-house and create delicious and complex lunches. For instance, their All American (8.99) comes with a snappy all natural bratwurst from Niman Ranch. The brat does not come in a hot dog bun, but is split open and served sandwich style on thick-cut white bread that is delightfully crunchy.
Melted among the meat is gooey and warm cheddar cheese, and on the other side there's caramelized onions and a house-made root beer mustard. These additions give the sandwich just a touch of sweetness, but it's by no means overwhelming. (The root beer is so subtle, you probably couldn't pick it out if you didn't know it was there.) I fell hard for the pickle relish, which featured mustard seeds, chopped cornichons, capers, and other delicious salty treats. It complimented the cheese perfectly, and added a nice crunchy texture and freshness in the absence of traditional sandwich items like lettuce and tomato. A dressed up sandwich you can still enjoy on the primordial "mmmm, melted cheese" level.
