A Sandwich a Day: Mozzarella Sandwich at Iron Tomato in Chelsea Triangle French Market

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know.—The Mgmt.

Every Friday and Saturday there's a little pop-up market in Chelsea featuring everything from fresh bread to charcuterie to handmade mozzarella. The Iron Tomato stand uses that mozzarella in two lovely sandwiches ($7 each) that come on delightfully soft, admittedly less crusty versions of baguette-like bread. There's a simple version with only a few fresh basil leaves and a couple slices of tomato, and another with arugula and sparse slices of prosciutto. Both are worthy lunches, but purists that we are, we preferred the classic caprese for its simple balance.

The mozzarella itself is top notch. It's milky, creamy, and doesn't have a trace of rubberiness that comes with refrigerated mozzarella. The soft bread that comes with both sandwiches does a great job of soaking up the milk that oozes from the cheese. The market is only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 3 PM, so plan accordingly and stop by for a sandwich or pick up a whole ball.
