Egg salad sandwiches carry something of a bad rep as flavorless, over-mayo'd gut bombs. At Barbarini, the egg salad-like sandwich is called Shredded Egg Sandwich with Ham ($9). Well, Barbarini can call it whatever they want, because it's damn good.
The fluffy, creamy egg is bolstered by house-made mayo, which is rich and full bodied but doesn't overpower the egg. Salty-sweet ham livens up the egg, and is used sparingly enough to be seen as an accent and flavor more than a primary ingredients. Some curls of slightly bitter lettuce add crunch, and the chewy, crusty roll with large holes to capture the egg seals the deal. It comes with a small green salad on the side—a great choice for breakfast or lunch in the Financial District.
