In season now: tomatoes! all tomato everything! but also, peaches, plums, apricots, all manner of stone fruit, bell peppers, summer squash, melons, basil, fresh herbs, artichokes, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, some new apples, and much more.
In season soon: More hot peppers, melons, new season apples. And the tomatoes should be around a while longer, but peak season is here right now, so prices may soon rise.
Oh, tomato season! Many a market shopper's favorite time of year, and this year, we happen to be seeing the best tomato crop in years. And since the season is at its peak, the prices are at their lowest. Heirlooms are coming in at about $4/pound, and regular red and orange beefsteaks and Jersey tomatoes are at an insanely low $2/pound. That means it's time to start stocking up, eating tomatoes at every meal, and freezing them for winter en masse (or canning, for you overachievers). Because when tomato season ends, you won't see tomatoes like these until next year.
We're so excited about the tomato crop, we decided to devote this week's slideshow entirely to tomatoes.
