A Sandwich A Day: Pulled Portobello at Rub BBQ

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

BBQ joints are notoriously troublesome dining destinations for vegetarians, who often find themselves slaves to the sides menu. But Chelsea's Rub BBQ seeks to break this trend with the Pulled Portobello ($10.25). An attempt at recreating the smoky bliss that is pulled pork on a bun, this sandwich features strips of smoked, sauced portobello mushrooms (not sure you can really pull a mushroom) and crunchy grilled onions on a generic seeded burger bun with a couple pickle chips on the side.

These elements mesh well together, with the onions providing some welcome textural contrast. Rub does succeed in imparting smokiness to the 'shrooms...too much smokiness. In fact, the portobellos have an almost sooty, over-smoked aftertaste for which an extra dose of sweet and slightly spicy barbecue sauce is the best remedy. Additionally, we would have appreciated some more portobellos (or a side of fries) to justify the ten-dollar price tag.

Despite these issues, the Pulled Portobello is a decent option for vegetarians seeking more than just collards and potatoes while out to barbecue with friends.
