The field tomatoes that were showing up here and there at the market over the last couple weeks really arrived this week in Union Square, where heirlooms and Jersey tomatoes of every shape, size and color hit the stalls, reminding us what those grainy, mushy specimens at the grocery store are actually supposed to taste like. Summer is in full swing, and melons are also beginning to show up at some stands, along with bell peppers, Italian and green gage plums, and other varieties of stone fruit. Get to the market ASAP; these are the days that we dream about all year long.
The Union Square Greenmarket is open on the North and West sides of Union Square Park every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8am-6pm.
