Yesterday we named Eddie's Sweet Shop the home of one of our favorite sundaes in New York, but the place is so good it's worth a post of its own. I grew up going to Eddie's for mammoth scoops of homemade ice cream topped with hot fudge and schlag so thick it rivaled Peter Luger's. It hasn't changed since I was in my single digits, and barring the advanced cell phone technology the young staff now uses, I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed since it opened forever ago.

Eddie's was doing craft everything before it was cool: the 20+ flavors of ice cream, sauces, and toppings are all made in-house, and while the ice cream may not be quite as intensely flavored as others around town, it's exceptionally creamy with a good bit of chew—the kind of all-American ice cream that sometimes feels like a rare breed these days.

Bittersweet coffee chip is a standout, which is fortunate, because it goes so well with the dark, thick hot fudge sauce that slowly creeps down the sundae cup onto the saucer below. And whipped cream here is a must, proud and thick and barely sweet. Should you need another bite of something sweet (you won't—portions here are huge), the light, frothy milkshakes here are some of the best in the city.

It's an ice cream experience that's as much about the setting as anything else: the marble-topped bar with spinning wooden stools; the dark booths in the back where teenagers sequester themselves on first dates (still!); the ancient mechanical cash register and art deco refrigerators; the penny candy booth across the tiled floor; the old school silver- and dishware. All of it screams classic scoop shop.

But for me, above all else, the ultimate charm of Eddie's is the local clientele, all of whom look so happy to be there, pulled out of time and the onward charge of New York living. Lots of professional dessert makers make it their mission to see their customers happy above all else; Eddie's succeeds with the best of them.
