A Sandwich A Day: Banh Mi Thit Heo Quay (Chinese Roast Pork Belly) at Hing Won

We've eaten plenty of banh mi at Serious Eats, but never before have we tried one from a Chinese restaurant—except at Hing Won in Midtown (previously: their roast duck sandwich). Prepared in a tiny nook beside the familiar multicolored buffet spread, the Banh Mi Thit Heo Quay ($6.45) features the standard toppings of pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeño along with sweet and salty Chinese roast pork belly on a baguette.

The pork filling is pleasantly fatty, and features a bunch of crispy bits that mingle nicely with the heavy slather of mayo. Although the bread resembles a deli hero more than the traditional light rice flour baguette, it's got a nice crunch and doesn't dwarf the insides as some hero rolls tend to do. While it's neither conventional nor revelatory, Hing Won's banh mi is a solid choice in a neighborhood lacking in reliable lunch spots.
