A Sandwich a Day: Toasts at The Commons Chelsea

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Is a toast a sandwich? For all intents and purposes, I would have to say yes. It's bread with stuff on it, and f you're craving a sandwich, a toast's base elements should satisfy you. Open-faced toasts typically go in one of two directions: piled high in a structure that would be unsound between two slices of bread, or kept plain and simple. The Commons Chelsea takes the simple route with the toasts I tried today, and I applaud them for it.

The avocado toast ($7.00) hosts a bounty of avocado. I'm pretty sure this sandwich had an entire avocado on it, possibly even more. In a sandwich like this, the ripeness of the avocado makes or breaks the meal, and this one was at its peak. The toasty baguette was sturdy, yet easy to bite through, and I was pleased to discover it had been hollowed out a little; an avocado cradle, if you will. The top was dusted with cumin and chili flakes, and drizzled with olive oil and lemon. The cumin was a little overpowering, but in the end, inconsequential to my enjoyment of this toast, which was both simple and decadent.

The artichoke toast ($8.00) was also delicious. The toast was topped with garlicky cannellini beans, chopped artichokes, grated Grana Padano, and a drizzle of olive oil. The mixture was somewhere between a bean salad and a spread, since some of the beans were mashed, and a little on the mushy side. Definitely a second favorite when compared to the avocado, but still light and full of flavor.
