Don't let the name fool you: Jackson Heights' Rajbhog Sweets has some mighty fine savory bites on their menu. One of our favorites is their Samosa Chaat ($4.99), an inventive concoction of fried, smashed samosas smothered with thick chickpea curry, smooth yogurt, fresh onions and tangy tamarind, all topped with a liberal dusting of sev (crispy fried chickpea noodles). Yes, there is a lot going on here, but the contrasting flavors, textures and temperatures magically come together; each bite is more exciting than the last.
Priced like a snack, this dish is filling enough for a meal, but Rajbhog is no white-cloth dining experience. It attracts locals and those on the hunt for some take-home sweets and a quick chaat (they have eight varieties). But when the prices and (paper!) plates are this good, who cares about ambiance?
