We've come across kale chips in many forms: laced in cheese, tossed with chilis, and even a version with garlic and Indian spices. But Organic Avenue is the only I know of that offers a dessert version of kale chips. Chocolate Kale Chips ($8.50) to be specific. The crisp kale leaves are seasoned with a blend of cocoa powder and coconut sugar for a subtle sweetness. It's almost like the health food version of chocolate covered potato chips. But the real kicker? They unexpected savory edge. It comes from the salt, dried onion, and black pepper, all mingled in with the cocoa and sugar. A total surprise, but one that worked well, intriguing at the very least.
