It's springtime at Park Slope's popular locavore kitchen, Flatbush Farm, which means a crop of great produce—lettuces, asparagus, spring beans, and beets—is making its way into the lunch and dinner menu.
Over on the Bar(n) side of Flatbush Farm, the bar menu is also taking advantage of the abundance of fresh spring vegetables, starting with an excellent Warm Artichoke Dip with Lavash Crackers ($8). Crack into the cheesy crust and discover lush melted artichokes with a tangy pop of lemon. Bonus points to Bar(n) for going easy on the cream in this concoction.
Spring vegetables have also found their way onto the Farm Toast ($8), available in Animal or Vegetable. The lardo toast (pictured) features scallions and pickled ramps, though the selection changes daily.
Starring in the classic duo of Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup ($10) is not the cheddar grilled cheese (above average in its own right) but rather the rich tomato soup, brightened with a bit of fennel. You'll find yourself dipping your finger into the soup after you've run out of sandwich.
Springtime isn't just limited to great produce; Bar(n)'s version of Amish Hot Wings with Blue Cheese Dressing ($12), made with spring poultry from Amish country, are meaty and full of flavor, proving that you can indeed elevate mundane bar food with quality ingredients.
As the weather gets warmer, enjoy the weekday happy hour from 5-7 PM on their backyard patio; all pints and glasses of wine at Bar(n) are $2 off.
