A day spent wandering Chinatown can wear you down fast, and the obvious fuel of some starchy dumplings may put you to sleep more than fuel you up. Times like these demand a concentrated chunk of protein—and there's no better answer than jerky.

New Beef King, one of our Chinatown jerky favorites, sells a delicious moist (i.e. not preserved) jerky: spicy, meaty, and sweet. Strips are the most compact portable option; red-lacquered pork is the two dimensional version of the char siu roast pork hanging in nearby windows. Opt for the spicy versions if you have any tolerance whatsoever, as it adds serious dimension to the meat.

My favorite offerings are the chunks, deeply spiced nuggets of extra-moist meat with a satisfying chew. Curry beef is especially nice—the ruddy curry powder brings out the sweetness of the beef. Each jerky will run you about $20 a pound, but a quarter pound makes for several generous snacks.
