The Southern-style café Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter on Avenue C is serving up a classic item of Southern nostalgia: pimento cheese ($8.00), available on either white or whole wheat sliced bread. Us New Yorkers might put out a plate of hummus or guacamole when we have friends over, but in the South, you're more likely encounter this spread—typically a mix of cheese, mayo, chopped sweet red peppers and seasoning--available for topping bread or crackers. White bread is its more traditional partner, but I opted for whole wheat, and I think it's a smart choice: the nuttiness of the grain provides some backbone for the savory and incredibly rich cheese spread, which is laid on thick.
It's a creamy, fatty treat that is only slightly blunted by the complimentary side salad (a larger portion than photographed above). We agreed that this sandwich is best for sharing. Downing a whole one might make the usually optional post-prandial nap more of a pressing need than a passing fancy.
