A handheld cake, a petite 3-by-3 inch square, so easy to pick up. Meet the Black and White Cake ($3.75) from Locanda Verde. A plain white coconut cake, the entire slice dipped in a shell of dark chocolate. The cake is light, delicate and all but falling apart when you lift it up, an airy wonder polished in toasted coconut flakes. This one deserves to be paired with the housemade hot chocolate (which is served with a honey marshmallow this winter!).
If you come in the morning, Apple Cider Doughnuts are still in rotation, as are some killer citrus sugar-dusted doughnuts—oval yeasty rounds with just enough of a citrus tang to carry us right out of this winter weather. Look carefully though the bakery counter and you'll find a few more citrus-y sweets, including this muffin-like scone dotted in big chocolate chunks and softly scented with candied orange peel folded into the batter.
