Tyler Kord loves mayonnaise, and he is not afraid to use it. A sign on the wall at the new Greenpoint, Brooklyn location of his No. 7 Sub shop simultaneously sings its praises and offers fair warning to those who — gasp! — don't like it.
But mayo is not the only thing between the bread here. Kord is the kind of guy that tempura-batters his broccoli and smokes his French dressing. He builds sandwiches with structural integrity and a seemingly inexhaustible variety of ingredients. Crunch mingles with cream, salty hangs with sweet and spicy, and the whole thing hangs together through the very end — no filling left behind.
In other words, Tyler Kord understands that proper sub construction is as much a craft as it is an art. He's got ideas for days, and he's not afraid to swim against the current of bánh mì and burgers. Check out the slideshow above to see six of Kord's quirky creations now available in his new Greenpoint shop. (At the time of this article, all subs cost $9.)
