Sugar Rush: More Pumpkin Gelato
We're no strangers to pumpkin ice cream and gelato. Between the months of October and December each year, my love for any other flavor takes a backseat. We've done roundups on ten spots for pumpkin ice cream and the occasional feature on pumpkin gelato around town. But now there's two more we must add to the growing list.
First, Pumpkin Gelato by the pint at Otto. Any gelato from the kitchen of Meredith Kurtzman, Otto's gelato wizard, is guaranteed to be great. And this pumpkin gelato is no different, with a perfectly rounded and balanced profile, rich and easy-melting on the tongue. The focus is pumpkin itself and not so much the spices that typically come with it.
A few blocks south on Great Jones Street is il Buco Alimentari. The gelato stand is near the entrance of this market/restaurant/espresso bar. Pair a paddle of housemade Pumpkin Gelato with the Salted Caramel Gelato. The two unexpectedly go hand in hand, the savory, almost smoky notes of the salted caramel balancing the sweeter, creamier pumpkin. Do note that the gelato here is noticeably more dense than most places in the city; whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of preference. Alternate spoonfuls, and it'll be pumpkin gelato like you've never had before.
