The platos ($7.35 for carnitas or pollo asado, $7.81 for carne asada, plus $0.92 for guacamole) at Dos Toros are the kind of menu item that's more healthy in theory than in practice. Sure, skipping the tortillas and opting to eat your burrito filling salad-style saves a few carbs. But it doesn't lighten the meal all that much—you're still looking at a pretty huge amount of beans, meat, salsa, cheese, guacamole, and very hot salsa verde.

This one, with pinto beans and pork carnitas, was quite good; the "salad" method also gives you more control over which components to eat when, in case you ever feel like eating a burrito is too chaotic an experience. Each ingredient gets a little more room to shine here. I, for one, never noticed before how tasty Dos Toros' pinto beans are on their own.

Is this going to become my go-to order at Dos Toros? Probably not; they get their tortillas from Tortilleria Nixtamal, one of the best parts about the place. But for a change of pace, give the platos a try.
