At Gotham Bar & Grill, any dessert on the lunch prix fixe menu is just an additional $7, a bargain for this restaurant where the regular dessert menu run into the mid-teens. There's always three offerings—their classic and super-indulgent Gotham chocolate cake, assorted sorbets, and then a seasonal dessert. The current seasonal special is a Fig Mousse Cake. It's pure in flavor, light and borderline foamy, topped with matching gelée. It rests on a thin cake layer that bears an uncanny resemblance to the much-loved Chinese sponge cakes. It's an ideal pairing of textures, especially when accompanied with vanilla bean-specked ice cream and a crown of soft bites of quartered caramelized figs. If you dissect it, you'll find almond elements here in the form of a paper thin brittle and also an almond nougatine. Alone, it's reason enough to pay a lunch visit to Gotham Bar & Grill.
