Sugar Rush: Canelés by Social Eats

If you're at Smorgasburg this Saturday, keep an eye out for the Social Eats stand (not to be confused with Social Eatz!). It will be their last week selling Canelés, priced at four mini canelés for $5. They come in a fragrant vanilla bean number (the best of the bunch), a borderline-nutty coffee, and citrus version.

Good canelés can be difficult to come by in the city. Les Canelés de Céline makes my favorite, but because it's not always possible to make the order minimum and order in advance, Balthazar Bakery has become my go-to spot for canelés in a pinch. The ones from Social Eats are quite good; they've got the crisp, caramelized exterior down, though the inside isn't quite moist enough and is excessively chewy. Nonetheless, anyone that decides to even attempt to bake and serve up these notoriously temperamental pastries deserves a little credit.
