Beefsteak Tomatoes, Eckerton Hill Farm
A word on the price of tomatoes at the Greenmarket. It's peak season for tomatoes right now, and all over the market are sweet, juicy tomatoes of every size, shape and color. Orange, gold, green, red, striped, cherry, grape, beefsteak, bulbous, you name it. The surplus of tomatoes works in our favor: you're not going to see tomatoes at these prices for long, and when they're gone, it's until next year. This week we saw prices like these, at Eckerton Hill Farm, as low as 2.50/lb. Sure, they're not as beautiful as the picturesque heirlooms, but they don't disappoint. If you're making some gazpacho, or sauce to freeze for the winter, what's the difference?
Assorted Heirloom Tomoatoes, Eckerton Hill Farm
Of course, even the beautiful heirlooms are a steal right now at $3/box. Point is, you can't go wrong.
Tomatillos, Rogowski Farm
Tomatillos are also popping up around the market, like these from Rogowski Farm.
Green Grapes and Donut Peaches, Fantasy Fruit Farm
Fantasy Fruit Farm also had grapes in last week, as well as donut peaches.
White and Yellow Peaches and Nectarines, Terhune Orchards
Peaches and nectarines are at peak season, and these, from Terhune Orchards, did not disappoint.
New Apples, Terhune Orchards
Terhune also has the first of their new crop of apples. Apples: back in season, if you missed them.
Cherry Peppers, Norwich Meadows Farm
Norwich Meadows also had peppers, but of the sweet variety: these beautiful red and yellow cherry peppers.
Thai Basil and Bush Basil, Paffenfroth Gardens
Paffenfroth is one of my favorite of the larger stands in Union Square--they've got just about everything, including a huge selection of herbs like these varieties of basil. When I've only got time to hit one stand at the market and run, Paffenfroth is often my go-to.
Garlic Chives, Paffenfroth Gardens
Paffenfroth also had these beautiful garlic chives last week--I like to add enormous handfuls to any stir-fried dish I'm making.
