We ordered take-out from Congee Village recently. (Yeah, we're a little crazy to order congee in the summer.) As the name suggests, Congee Village is dedicated to all things congee, the Asian rice porridge, with over 30 varieties ranging from $2.95 to $7.75. If dining in, the congee is served bubbling hot in a terracotta casserole, steaming with the aroma of whatever's added on top. It's hearty, soothing, and technically more of a winter staple, but as a congee enthusiast, I can eat it anytime (and do!).
Each serving is a generous portion, enough for two people, so we planned accordingly and ordered three kinds for the entire office. The chicken with shiitake mushroom congee ($3.95) was our favorite. The rice in the congee is nicely cooked down to an almost creamy texture, and the soup is well-flavored like some sort of chicken stock. Thin slices of shiitake mushroom are blended with chunks of tender, flavorful chicken cubes.
