A Sandwich a Day: Slumdog Millionaire at Better Being Underground
In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

If you haven't heard of this lunch-only, open-til-the-sandwiches-are-gone joint in the West Village, you're not alone. Better Being Underground, known to some as "The Underground Lunch," is underground in the literal sense. Look for the long, fast-moving line of lunchers.
Sandwiches change all the time, so we're only left with our first impressions. Their Slumdog Millionaire, a mixture of curried chicken, cilantro, mint, and spinach on a pressed garlic flatbread doesn't quite live up to the gotta-get-one-before-it's-gone sense this place seems to be going for. The chicken pieces were rather dry, and the curry was more of a mild flavor than a spice; the cilantro and mint get lost in the curry. The staff described the sandwich as, "not bad, just generic." The garlic bread with the curry paste was soggy (the sandwiches are pre-made and sit out), but tasty. If you're looking for a generic chicken sandwich that makes you feel like an insider, perhaps the Slumdog Millionaire is for you. But we've since discovered better options at Better Being Underground—more on those to come.
