Opened back in 1973 in Somerville, Massachusetts by Steve Herrell, Steve's Ice Cream created the concept of mix-in, where customers can mix in any fruit or candy or cookie into their ice cream. The business eventually closed in 1994 but was revived in late 2010 by a former employee, David Stein. They're already selling pints in retail stores, and they're soon to open stores in Boerum Hill and Midtown; check their site for updates.
I was lucky enough to get a look at their kitchen out in Long Island where they were testing out new flavors. The day that I went, I got to taste their first batch of coconut ice cream with cilantro and lime, and witnessed their first attempt at an ice cream sandwich using cookies from Brooklyn's own Ovenly.
Check the slideshow out for a peek into their kitchen.
