Sugar Rush: Ice Cream Sandwiches at Melt Bakery
Laren's Meet & Eat with Melt Bakery gave me a massive ice cream sandwich craving on my part—even in the dead of winter. Kareem and Julian are the two minds behind the bakery, best known for their creative, quirky, and always delicious ice cream sandwich combinations. The sandwiches are $5 apiece, each ideally sized to pacify that afternoon sweet craving. Flavors change frequently, with at least five types at any give time.
Check their website for current flavors, which might include Thick Mint, a pairing of peppermint ice cream with crackly chocolate cookies; Elvis, with peanut butter cookies and a truly excellent banana ice cream; and Cinnamax, with cinnamon ice cream and snickerdoodle cookies. The nicest part is that you'll find a broad range of cookie textures, from the crunchy chocolate to a plush, Whoopie pie-like red velvet with crisp edges to a chewy snickerdoodle number. If you want them delivered (!) the limit is one dozen, though there's no minimum for pick-up from their Lower East Side/Chinatown kitchen. And if you do pick up, keep in mind that this is the perfect finish to a lunch of steamed-to-order cheung funn noodles at Sunlight Bakery across the street.
