At Vandaag in the East Village, the Frisian Sugar Bread is somewhere at the intersection of a cinnamon roll and a sweet bread, with a healthy topping of pearl sugar. It's served by the generous half-loaf for $4 or whole for $7. Come in the mornings for a fresh loaf. Have it to go, or even better, have it to stay, where the bread is delivered toasted on a slate board accompanied by whipped butter, a housemade chocolate-hazelnut spread (think Nutella, only better with crunchy bits of hazelnut and a bit of salt), and one very memorable apple aquavit jam.
The impossibly moist Carrot Parsnip Bread ($4) should also be on your must-get list. A thick rectangular slice cut in half, warmed and topped with what every cream frosting aspires to be—smooth, whipped, creamy with a tang. For those with a savory breakfast tooth, there's an Egg Sandwich ($6) where aged gouda practically melts into soft scrambled eggs on a toasted brioche bun.
