Lady M is most famous for their Mille Crêpes, though other cakes offered at this too-chic-for-words Upper East Side boutique deserve just as much attention. Case in point: a towering cut of Strawberry Mille Feuille ($8) in which airy vanilla sponge cake and a full-bodied cream custard are layered with strawberries and shatter-prone puff pastry.

The best bite is when you capture both the chilled custard folded with whipped cream and puff pastry in the same bite—butter and cream in the same mouthful, how wonderful is that? This Strawberry Mille Feuille is regularly rotated with a memorable Banana Mille Feuille, which is served in wedges, as opposed to rectangular slices. The sponge cake layer is omitted in the banana version, but instead, you get double the fresh custard cream, with sliced bananas tucked in the middle. Now if only they'd come out with a Blueberry Mille Feuille...
