At the recently opened Café Kristall inside the Swarovski Crystallized Boutique, the Austrian desserts are kept in glass cases, not unlike the crystals for sale just a few feet away. The expected Sachertorte and Apple Strudel are there, but why not venture for something a little more interesting? I loved the Topfentorte ($6), a round of quark cheesecake mousse—remarkably creamy and light as air, almost bordering on savory. Slice down the middle to reveal a filling of tiny diced sweet poached pears. Simplicity is best, letting the quark take center stage. At the base, a moist vanilla biscuit, and then white chocolate—pretty but unnecessary. Also recommended is the elegant Kristalltorte ($6), which cradles a pocket of fresh strawberry compote within a round of bright champagne and strawberry mousse.
