A Sandwich a Day: The Panelle Special at Joe's of Avenue U, Gravesend, Brooklyn

In this great city of ours, you could eat a different sandwich every day—so that's what we do with A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York City. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

See that little dollop of ricotta cheese on the wrapper (above)? I'm surprised that's the only bit that made its way outside the roll here. At least pre-bite, that is, because once you chomp down on a panelle special sandwich ($5.99 on a roll, as shown) from Joe's of Avenue U, well, you just better hope you've got a lot of napkins in your to-go bag.

Joe's starts with a few sheets of panelle, Sicilian chickpea fritters, which they deep-fry to order. These crisp, hot rectangles are slapped on a sesame roll and absolutely smothered with ricotta. Add to that a fistful of Parmesan and run it quickly under the broiler and you've got a serious two-handed turbocarbed treat. Don't blame me if you have to take a nap after you eat this thing. Think you can handle more than what's pictured? You can also get it in hero form.
