Sugar Rush: Yellow Cake and Chocolate Crème Fraîche at Peels

The cake is solid, but the frosting steals the show in this buttery wedge from Peels, the new cafe from the owner of Freemans. All the pastries are baked on-site by highly credentialed pastry chef (and food blogger) Shuna Fish Lydon. $4 each, these slices start with a simple base of yellow cake, moist with a coarse and consistent crumb, topped with a good half-inch layer of chocolate frosting. But it's not just any chocolate frosting—it's a chocolate crème fraîche frosting, silky smooth, melting on the tongue and leaving behind a haunting tang. Only a few steps below a ganache frosting in terms of richness, and decked out in a dusting of cocoa powder, it's the kind of frosting I find myself longing for every day.
