A Sandwich a Day: Turkey Leg from Henry Public

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Very few sandwiches have been built up to me as much as the Turkey Leg from Henry Public. It's been recommended by so many trusted sources, so emphatically, that I started recommending it to others myself (before ever trying it, ha!). But eventually I did try it, and thankfully it wasn't a super-hyped-tragic-letdown situation.

The dark leg meat is tender and succulent, almost pulled pork reminiscent, after being roasted, pulled off the bone, and braised in milk for hours. The heaping pile of peppery turkey shreds are layered with crispy-fried onions and juniper pickles (pickled in-house) in between thick-cut, toasted Pullman slices.

This is easily the best turkey sandwich I've ever eaten, save for maybe the day-after-Thanksgiving ones. It's homey-tasting and sits in your stomach like a big pillow for hours. Plus, they serve it—with nicely salted, crispy fries on the side!—until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and 1 a.m. during the week (an hour before closing time). I dare you to find a better sandwich at that hour in Brooklyn.
