Num Pang seems to have this amazing ability to turn out killer vegetarian sandwiches. l walk into the sandwich shop craving a pork belly sandwich, but end up leaving with their vegetarian special on more occasions than I can remember. This one, the Salt and Pepper Yam, is a solid winner with vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. It starts with Parisi bread, toasted with a smear of mayonnaise. In go layers of thinly sliced, roasted salt and pepper Japanese yam—crisp on the outside, creamy sweet on the inside—with a helping of warm sauteed chard and cipollini onions. Finish off with sliced cucumbers and a tangle of pickled carrots and fresh cilantro. It's a hefty (though I dare say, semi-healthy?) sandwich and fairly priced at $7.25.
