Sugar Rush: The Good Batch, Stroopwafels at the Brooklyn Flea
At the Brooklyn Flea, the usual suspects are all there—cupcakes, more cupcakes, chocolate, more chocolate, yogurt. All that is great, but after a while, you can't help but crave something more exciting. That's why I was so happy to see The Good Batch, found by Anna Gordon, owner and baker. It was her boyfriend's family, originally from the Netherlands, who introduced her to stroopwafels. But it wasn't until a recent visit to Holland that Anna got the idea to just make them herself.
The Classic Stroopwafels, pictured above, are the foundation of the business, and the first you ought to try. Two very thin spiced waffle cookies with a lush caramel filling in the middle. The caramel is on the buttery side, and the whole cookie is best consumed after a brief sit atop a mug of hot tea—when the caramel gets all warm and gooey, the cookie itself softens just a touch, and the whole thing becomes melty and delectable. Each cookie is wide enough to rest atop even the largest of mugs.
A Cocoa-Caramel Stroopwafel features the same caramel filling as the classic stroopwafel, but with a chocolatey cocoa cookie. And if that's not enough chocolate for you, try the Bonfire Stroopwafel. The same cocoa waffle cookies coupled with dark chocolate ganache, roasted meringue, salted caramel sauce. Indulgent to say the least!
The Honey Bear Stroopwafel showcases a housemade peanut butter filling, whipped with vanilla and plenty of honey. It's good enough that if the peanut butter filling were sold alone in jars, I would buy to slather on toast in the mornings.
Anna plans to introduce seasonal specials frequently, with the goal of using as many local and seasonal fruits as possible. One current special is the Strawberry Stroopwalfel. Here the waffle cookie is soft—unlike the crisp classics, these are more cakey and tender, with a sweet smother of jam made from local strawberries. In the specials category, expect to find an Spiked Arnold Palmer Stroopwafel this weekend at the Flea—black tea waffle cookies with a filling of mint-whiskey lemonade.

Classic and Cocoa Caramel Stroopwafel 8-packs go for $8. At the Flea, slightly larger individual stroopwafels are $2 each. "Specials" (Bonfire, Honey Bear, etc.) are $3 each.
