Sugar Rush: Tart Normandy at Margot Patisserie

The address is on Broadway, but you have to look a little closer to find Margot Patisserie on the Upper West Side. Turn the corner onto 74th Street, look for a sliver of a bakery tucked between the Ansonia and a laundromat. Now that's Margot Patisserie, a bakery you don't read much about on the Internet, but a place that has certainly earned a devoted following. The apple turnovers at this bakery are stellar, as are the Cherry Clafouti.

Lately, however, I've been pining over the Tart Normandy ($3.50) with a shell as buttery and crisp as could be. In a traditional Tart Normandy, the Calvados-spiked frangipane filling is topped with thin apple slices arranged in picture perfect order. But at Margot, the Calvados is omitted and the apples are cut in small chunks, studded about the nutty, custardy filling. A flurry of sliced, toasted almonds to finish. Not traditional. But delicious? Oh yes.
