Sugar Rush: Churros at El Quinto Pino
I stopped by El Quinto Pino this morning in hopes of snagging an ensaimada, a Mallorcan sweet bun, off their newly debuted breakfast menu. But alas! They were out. Apparently someone who came in just before me bought them all. Minutes later another woman came, also requesting an ensaimada. She was terribly sad as well. "They are amazing," the woman sighed dreamily.
So I made do with an order of churros ($6) served with housemade dulce de leche. The churros come three to a serving, fried to order, long curled twigs dusted in cinnamon-sugar. There's a bit too much sugar, and the churro interior is more wet than I'd like—but straight out of the oil like that, and fried to a sharp golden crisp, small things are easier to forgive. Will be back for the ensaimadas!
