A Sandwich a Day: The Sofia Loren at Lioni Heroes

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Choosing a sandwich from Lioni Heroes in Bensonhurst is a daunting task. The menu lists over 150 heroes all named for famous Italians. There's the Louie Prima, The Susan Lucci, and even a hero named after Scott Biao. After much deliberation I chose the Sophia Loren ($13.00)—a beautiful sandwich, as the menu will have you know.

Served on Cammareri Brother's bread, the hero is generously stuffed with prosciutto di Parma, Lioni's house made fresh mozzarella, sweet stuffed peppers, and shredded iceberg dressed with olive oil and black pepper. The combination of the creamy mild mozzarella, sweet-salty prosciutto, and slightly spicy and vinegary pickled peppers stuffed with breadcrumbs was unbelievable. The textures and flavors melded perfectly, leaving you wanting to take a few more bites even after you are painfully full (it's a big sandwich, almost 18 inches by my estimation). Stuffed peppers on a sandwich: the world needs more of those.
