What's The Deal With Those Food Trucks?

You asked about the fancy food trucks out on the streets of New York today; we've got the answers.

Fancy food trucks? What fancy food trucks? As part of the launch promotion for NBC's new website Feast, chefs including Daniel Boulud and Paul Liebrandt (of Corton) will be serving from trucks around town.

20100208truckpaul.jpgAre the chefs really there? Indeed, they are; here's Paul Liebrandt, in between rounds of croquette-frying and malt powder-shaking. Boulud is serving in Midtown this afternoon, with Michael White and Alain Ducasse to follow.

Is this all legal? PR assured us that all the food truck paperwork was in place. Did Liebrandt and Boulud navigate the notoriously labyrinthine street vendor licensing process? Well, of course not. (Note to future food trucks: the easiest way to start one up appears to be with the backing of NBC Universal.)

20100208fish.jpgWhat are they serving? Something different at each truck. We got to try Liebrandt's "fish and chips"—a tender cod croquette, with hints of lemon zest and dill, in a cone of perfectly crisp paper-thin potato chips. It was, unsurprisingly, delicious. It was also a two-bite affair.

Fish and chips before noon? Yep. Not a problem.

Can I get on board? Well—not really. Access is limited to those who entered an NBC New York contest and made it onto the pre-approved list. So if you haven't gotten your "golden ticket" and received an email about your assigned, undisclosed location, no street food for you.

But I'm really charming. Can I sneak my way in? There are a lot of clipboards between you and Daniel Boulud. Don't even try.

Is Boulud really wearing a shirt that says "Eat My Sausage"? Yes. Yes, he is.
