The Dessert Files: DT Works

New desserts are slowly but steadily making their way into the line-up of sweets at DT Works. I find this quite exciting, for as wonderful the classics served at the truck were, changes and additions are always welcome when done right. The whoopie pies are being edited and revised, but there are now macarons in the lineup as well as that chocolate mousse with a peanut butter center, first served a Citymeals-on-Wheels event in 2009. These new sweets are priced lower than the standard $6 that made up the old menu.

Pictured at top, the Chocolate Truffle Cake ($4.15)—on the small side, but decadent enough to compensate. A layer of praline crunch cuts through and rescues the lucky eater from what would otherwise surely be death by chocolate. Intense! A final glossy layer of dark chocolate, and pearls like those found at ChikaLicious, give this slice a polished finish.

Then there's the Almond Cake ($1.85), which resembles a giant financier, with a layer of caramelized pears through the center. The cake is nutty and moist, with a sugar-dusted top—that little extra crunch makes all the difference.

But it was the Panna Cotta Tart ($2.85) that stole my heart. A deep shell filled first with passion fruit curd, and then buttermilk panna cotta, almost whimsically light in body. A trio of raspberries to finish, and then that slip of a chocolate nibble—never fails to make me smile.
