Say hello to the new Mini Cakes ($2.25 each) from DT Works. Pick from among four flavors—or pick them all, as they're really quite small. These cakes meet at the intersection of cupcake, layer cake, and whoopie pie in a swift bite.
The most inventive of the bunch is the Olive Oil, Honey and Thyme combination, which also had the most moist and tender cake of the set. The thyme comes through very clearly and brings back memories of the Honey-Thyme loaves made at Arte Around the Corner on the Upper West Side.
For a real flavor burst, I'd go with the Passionfruit and Raspberry cake—the passionfruit gives every bit of the cream filling a piercing bite of sweet, tart flavor. Just wonderful. Between the chocolate numbers, I preferred the Chocolate and Pralines, where the praline cream was buttery rich—but if you're a mint lover, the Mint Chocolate Chip cake won't disappoint. Hard to decide, hard to decide!
