Hipsters Like Coconuts, Says the NYT
Pieces like this are why we all read the Styles section.
"Like banh mi sandwiches and sriracha chili sauce, the young coconut and its juice is the latest formerly humble food to be discovered by New York City's style set, and elevated -- if not quite to the level of a status symbol -- at least to that of a prized accessory. In the last few months, retailers in hipster hot spots like Williamsburg and the Lower East Side say they have sold unprecedented amounts of the fruit for streetside consumption." —NYT

That's hilarious. That's all I heard about this weekend from my friends ...coconut juice.

I'm skeptical about coconut. Some say it's healthy, but others say its fattening (coconut meat). I'm confused.

Common site in countries in Asia, such as the Philippines. Nothing new here.

My goodness, these guys are soooooo late. This is quite popular in the Caribbean and has been for like forever. If you go to the heavily Caribbean parts of brooklyn you will guys with machetes chopping them open and you will also see sugar cane lined up against a building. When will that catch on? in 2 years?

@Gargupie: Eat it. I am of the school that it's not fat that makes you fat, it's all the sugar and white carbs that are glopped on it. Have it along with the meat, it's yummy.

@gargupie: Coconut fat contains medium-chain fatty acids, which are unique because they are used by your body as energy before they have the chance to be stored as fat. Eat it! It's one of the healthiest fats out there for you.

Come on, guys. Yeah, it's a common sight in SE Asia or the Caribbean... but so are coconuts. They aren't exactly native to NYC. At least they're arriving now, rather than never.
