Video: Brooklyn's Illegal Urban Beekeepers Are Ready to Make Honey

20090825-video-brooklynhoney.jpg

Remember those three Brooklyn beekeeper dudes? Well they're covering up the leg tattoos (just briefly) to put on real head-to-toe beekeeper suits--it's time for their first illegal honey harvest! Using a special tool called a "scratcher," they picked off the tops of the comb and got really science labby with a centrifuge to apply some centripetal force on those honey frames.

After successfully filtering the golden goo, they shared a pretty tender moment pouring the inaugural jar, and couldn't help but spill a little on themselves. "I'm totally covered in honey. It's like lotion on here right now. It's the first time I haven't smelled like compost!" said Brandon Hoy, part of the urban beekeeping trio. From there he reclined on the rooftop and let his buddies just pour the stuff directly into his mouth. The video, after the jump.

So why are they illegal bee keepers?
What I mean is, what makes them illegal?

The New York City Health Code bans keeping animals that are ''wild, ferocious, fierce, dangerous or naturally inclined to do harm" (Section 161.01) and apparently bees are on that evildoer list. Maybe they do sting, and maybe sometimes the victims are allergic, but this makes them sound like lions or tigers.

Most beekeepers go the hush-hush route but recently councilmember David Yassky introduced a bill aimed to allow beekeepers to apply for licenses. He has been nicknamed "Yassky the Pooh."

Is Joan Rivers on that Health Code? If not, she should be......lol
