Video: Brooklyn's Cool New Backyard Farms

20090817-video-bkfarmyards.jpg

Most people assume it takes a lot of land to be considered "a farm" but Stacey Murphy, founder of BK Farmyards in Brooklyn, can transform any backyard with at least 400 square feet and six hours of daily sun exposure into a real-deal, produce-growing farm. It may not have rows of corn à la middle of Iowa but every 250-square feet can feed four to six people seasonally alone. Murphy already has two sites set up in Ditmas Park and is hunting for more urban land to farm-ify. The video, after the jump.

Its a damn garden, get over yourselves. Far cry from being a farm.

You are inspiring. I live in westchester and would love to start a small garden but feel so overwhelmed.

Next time you put a garden together film it! That way others can benefit from your expertise.

It takes a lot of effort to get a raised bed garden like that going. Lots of topsoil hauled in and compost items such as leaves and manure. So I give her a lot of credit and whoever helped with the muscle power

The garden looks very organized and productive. Not some half assed effort

Help us build more farms! We look forward to meeting you and hearing your urban agriculture stories!

If it weren't for people like Stacey Murphy, who grows her food without chemicals, I'd be dead from starvation. I had too much food all my my life that was grown by "big farm" farmers, who spray their crops, and now I'm relegated to only natural foods, or else I have all kinds of pains, rashes, itches, and other physical reactions. I'm so thankful that natural foods exist, and that people like this woman are willing to make sure that they do.

Hey Carlton, a garden consists of flowers and plants while a farm consists of vegetables, fruits and herbs. Get your definitions straight.
