The Whole Shebang: Eating Our Way Through the Doughnut Plant's Menu

A friend visiting from out of town rang me up last week. "I'm going to the Doughnut Plant tomorrow morning," she told me, "but I'm kind of overwhelmed by the options. What's the best doughnut they have?"
It was a seemingly innocent question, one logically posed to a food writer.
But asked to name the very best doughnut, I came up short. What kind of serious eater was I, if I hadn't sampled everything on the menu? I'd breakfasted my way through crème brûlée doughnuts and tres leches doughnuts, Blackout cake and carrot cake. But the other doughnuts had thus far eluded me. Even after grudgingly turning to Internet research, I couldn't locate a single piece with a comprehensive doughnut gallery.
There was only one solution—to trek down to the Doughnut Plant and order everything on the menu.

My vote for the most visually appealing goes to the carrot cake doughnut, with a sprinkle of orange freckles and a cream cheese frosting core. Recommended for those unashamed to eat leftover birthday cake for breakfast.

Banana pecan, impossibly light as it looks, houses a sticky banana interior. I loved it; others found it off-putting.

The banana cake worked better, closer to a proper banana bread, without that fluffy-dense contrast.

A vanilla bean doughnut resembled like your typical glazed, with the extra depth of high-quality vanilla. Traditionalists will appreciate this one.

The lavender cake doughnut was appropriately floral, though like most flower-inspired treats, overpoweringly sweet. My tasting companion loved it, but she has the kind of sweet tooth that hankers for rose and violet creams by the boxful.

I preferred the lavender raised doughnut, lighter and less cloying.

I generally find jelly doughnuts too sticky-sweet to tolerate, but had no problem with the vanilla glazed doughnut with raspberry jam, whose tart filling was a welcome surprise.

Ditto the peanut butter and jelly doughnut—the glaze sweet and nutty, the filling properly fruity.

For dark chocolate fans, there's the Valrhona cake...

... and the Valrhona yeast doughnut. Of these, I found the dense, brownie-like cake doughnut the stronger.

But both paled in comparison to the downright fudgy Blackout Doughnut, with a cake-crumb coating.

Blueberry doughnuts fell back into the too-sweet camp, relying more heavily on sugar than the fruit's natural tartness.

Ditto the coconut cream, whose flaky, moist coconut got lost in the thick outer glaze.

But the tres leches! Evoking the Latin American cake made with evaporated milk, condensed milk, and cream, its oozing core was a welcome reminder that sweetness can show complexity and depth. Even the tender cake surrounding it surpassed that of other doughnuts.

And best of all, in this snacker's opinion, was the crème brûlée doughnut; though hardly bigger than a doughnut hole, its crackly sugar crust gave way to a silky vanilla custard, with only enough dough to lend structure. (And pass this off a breakfast treat.)
The verdict? Blackout, for the chocoholics; carrot cake, for the non-traditionalists; tres leches, for the sweet tooth sophisticate; and crème brûlée for any occasion. Almost across the board, the cake doughnuts were tastier than their yeast-risen counterparts (and this, from one who generally finds herself inclined towards the raised). Sure, they're a bit dense for an everyday morning meal. But in the world of doughnuts, there's no stopping halfway. Go big—or go for the cereal box.

The tres leches donut is perhaps the world's greatest donut, in my opinion. But that carrot cake donut is ace too.

Oh.. you have to go back next February for the rose donut! It's so pretty and delish! The tres leches is one of my faves and now, dammit, I need to go to there. MM!

I bought a dozen or so of these donuts because I wanted to try everything, but then was horrified at what eating them all would do to me, so I took them in to work, cut them in quarters, and put them out on a plate for my colleagues to share.
I endorse this approach.
The creme brulee was my clear favorite. I liked the PB&J second. They were out of the tres leches when I went--clearly I MUST RETURN.
Oh, and cds345? They ain't cheap.

I have been to Doughnut Plant many times, and I have tried all their doughnuts. It is not an inexpensive venture, since most doughnuts cost between $2.25 to $3.00, but the doughnuts are worth every penny. My favorites are the creme brulee, the blackout, the tres leches, the coconut custard, and the peanut butter and jelly (what ever the jelly filling is). I found the peanut butter and banana doughnut a bit weird-tasting; the banana filling did not appeal to me much. I like to go there early in the morning when the doughnuts are freshly baked; I may miss out on some of the specials but my favorites are always available. What I miss? CHURROS!!!

For those of you, like me, who can't make it to the Lower East Side before work.. a *small selection* of the donuts are sold at places like Joe - The Art of Coffee, Dean & Deluca, Citarella, and Oren's. The Art of Coffee is the only convenient one for me, on the weekends, and usually has only a coconut filled yeast donut and 1-2 cake donuts, and a cinnamon bun.

Sorry, but the guy that owns this place is far too obnoxious for me to ever send a dime his way. Plenty of people make great donuts, not a tricky art form.

i had his jelly donuts a few years back and was bragging to a friend how good they were .... we finally got down there and were kind of disappointed . way, way to sweet and the jelly (which i had remembered as being very generous) was kind of skimpy. too much glaze .... but still the best show in town. the other flavors while sounding good, don't really appeal to me. for me a good jelly donut is it.

Tres leches didn't sound wonderful to me until I saw everyone raving about it on SE. Things in my life changed around so that these days I find myself on the LES frequently.
The tres leches is such a WOW that I hardly want to try anything else! At $2, it's also the least expensive.
I agree, the raised donuts have been generally disappointing. I didn't like the banana pecan, but I'll give the banana cake & carrot a try after reading this. And the creme brulee for sure.
Another fabulous benefit of going to the Donut Plant - it's a couple of doors away from Kossar's Bialys!
The 14A bus runs you there right from Union Square making it very easy to reach. Donut Plant & Kossar's are located on Grand Street between Essex & Norfolk Streets.

The tres leches is incredible. And it keeps overnight - the liquidy part sets into the dough and it tastes fantastic.

i've only been here once, and i bought maybe 4 different ones to sample alongside my husband. it was late in the day so there wasn't much stock left, but i got the lavender, vanilla bean, tres leches, blueberry. ALL were amazing, but for some reason the vanilla bean sticks out in my memory - it had a true, intense vanilla flavor, and it was simply delicious. i typically go for filled donuts, but this one just hit all the right notes. want to eat one NOW!!!

Bummer that you had a bad coconut cream experience. That's usually one of my favorites. I'd love to see them all tucked and nestled together happily in a box. What a great thing to bring to a party, or birthday, or the SE office!

The only doughnuts I like are plain cake. Everything else is (to me) too sweet. Does the Doughnut Plant ever have them?

I had these for the 1st time one week ago...I bought the tres leches, coconut cream, peanut butter/glazed and the creme brulee---aboslutely loved them especially the creme brulee which I thought was the best! I will go back at some point to try the carrot cake and the blackout ...worth the one hour trip.....
